Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP)
Recommends Meningococcal Booster at Age 16

In October 2010, Frankie Milley, Wendy Meigs, Marty Young, Jeremiah Mitchell and his mom attended the ACIP meetings in Atlanta. They testified on the importance of a meningococcal booster at age 16.
The prior recommendation was age 11-18.  However after some research it was found the current vaccine (Menactra) only had and efficacy life of 5 years instead of the previous thought 10. The committee decided in order to protect the two most at risk age groups, teens and college freshmen, a booster was necessary at 16 or 5 years after the first immunization.
There is new vaccine on the market called Menveo.

This web site is a project of Meningitis Angels. We are parents and survivors of bacterial meningitis.
Some of us have died and some have been left debilitated by  mostly preventable meningococcal,  pneumococcal and HIB meningitis.   We are here to share our stories, educate on this disease, advocate for prevention and support those families who join us.
Meningitis does not stop at the dorm room door. Infants, children, tweens, teens,  young adults and those with compormised immune systems are most at risk but anyone can get meningitis.

Please educate yourself and talk to your health care provider about vaccination to prevent these deadly diseases.

Remember January is back to school again.
On Saturday, August 14, 2010 during their “Second Saturday Screenings” event, all H-E-B pharmacies offered vaccines required for 7th grade entry, including a new meningitis vaccine  which protects against meningococcal meningitis. Meningitis Angels was happy to support this effort.
